My name is Vanessa Tucker and I have been married to my husband, Joaquin, since 2014. Together we are parents of 2 incredible boys – Julian (Jet), 7, and Vince, 5.
When Julian was born in 2015, we, like any first-time parents, were so excited yet nervous. We noticed within the first 18-24 months that something was different in his interactions with others. Joaquin and I noticed speech delays, lack of eye contact, and a constant desire to stack household items. As parents, you want to do everything in your OWN power to make sure that you are doing everything possible to ensure your child is fine. So we decided when Julian was 3 that we would have him tested for his speech delay. The results, although not a complete shock, revealed that Julian had ASD. Leaving the doctor’s office was a real “gut check” for my husband and me, but we immediately knew we would do everything in our power to advocate and get Julian the assistance he needed and deserved.
I’m not going to paint this picture as if it was easy. Before Julian’s pre-diagnosis, we had become pregnant with Vince. I now had 2 children that wanted and needed my attention, and also still had to wear the hat of the “career-driven wife.” So we began looking for different avenues to assist in Julian’s growth. Little did we know that the process of receiving services would be a time-consuming and difficult journey. In December of 2018, we launched a non-profit organization, “The Autism Help Foundation” to provide financial aid to ASD families in Northern Alabama who needed assistance with speech, ABA therapy, and OT support.
Although we created this organization, my husband and I wanted to make an even greater impact in the Huntsville community. At the beginning of 2021, we started researching how we could bring a sensory center to our ASD community, and low and behold, we found We Rock the Spectrum!!! Upon meeting with Dina and the team, we knew that this was the key and answer to our prayers. We personally know so many families who are looking for something like this and our new gym will be a safe space for not only our family but so many within our community. We are so excited to be a part of the WRTS family!
